Ann Arbor.Com article U-M Expansion....Tax Base2/10/13 - An article by Kellie Woodhouse of AnnArbor.com states that property acquisition in Ann Arbor will cause the city to lose tax revenue as the university is exempt from paying taxes. "When we do purchase property, it is for a very specific mission-driven purpose or it is very strategically located," says U-M Chief Financial Officer Timothy Slottow . "It's always nice when you're the size that we are if you have some opportunity to build a building on your core site, and we are basically land-constrained on central campus." Community Relations Guest Column Retort2/28/13 - Jim Kosteva, Director of Community Relations at U-M, wrote in a guest column that while it's easy to look at the "cons" of land acquisition, there are many "pros" to the community as well.
Comparing taxable value of property during that same time period in other Michigan cities that host state universities Shows there is both greater growth in property values and greater insulation from decline. See Tax Value Chart. Read entire article: Word Docx or AnnArbor.com |
Ann Arbor / Community NewsProject Healthy SchoolsA community-University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) collaborative Project Healthy Schools (PHS) provides a school-based program, in local schools to reduce childhood obesity and its long-term health risks. Focusing primarily on sixth grade students, PHS aims to stem the tide of this epidemic by teaching area youth healthy habits, developing healthy school environments, and creating an infrastructure that supports program sustainability and replication. Students, generally in their first year at middle school, participate in 10 hands-on activities. Step by step instructions, goals, props, required preparation, and additional enrichment activities are all included in the written activities. Activities provide learning experiences and tips on how students can put the 5 PHS key areas or goals into practice in their daily lives.
